Newcastle United have been dealt a blow as Chelsea ace Fikayo Tomori is reportedly close to joining Carlo Ancelotti at Everton on loan for the new 2020/21 term, according to ESPN.
As per the outlet, the Tyneside club were one of a number of teams that were interested in signing him in the summer transfer window along with Ligue 1 side Rennes.
However, the Toffees are thought to be in pole position to sign Tomori as talks between the two clubs from the Premier League are at an advanced stage.
Indeed, this is yet another blow to Steve Bruce as he is currently looking to strengthen in the centre of his defence. They were reportedly close to signing Arsenal’s Rob Holding on loan for the next season, to that too looks to have fallen through following a U-turn from the Gunners.
Tomori would have arguably been an upgrade on some of the current options available at the back to Bruce. The English international averaged more tackles, key passes and through balls per game in the top flight in the last campaign than Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and even club-captain Jamaal Lascelles (via Whoscored).
Does Tomori start for Newcastle?
He also won a relatively impressive 5.2 of his duels per match in England’s highest division and helped Frank Lampard’s team keep four clean sheets in the EPL (per Sofascore).
Nonetheless, it looks as if Tomori will join up with the Blues at Goodison Park instead of potentially moving to the North East in what is a bit of a blow to the Magpies, as the Toon may have to now pursue other transfer targets in the centre-back role in the market.
Geordies, would Tomori have been a good signing? Comment below!
