Newcastle United have missed out on signing Rob Dickie as Oxford United have confirmed on their official website that he has signed for Queens Park Rangers in the EFL Championship.
According to the League One club, the Englishman has left for an undisclosed fee after entering the final year of his deal.
Indeed, Steve Bruce’s team were reportedly interested in getting his signature over the dotted line along with the three promoted sides from England’s second division in Fulham, Leeds United and West Bromwich Albion, but a move never materialised and so Dickie has joined QPR instead for the new 2020/21 term.
It is a shame that the Magpies were not able to sign him up first as he could have proven to be a real rock in their defence.
Dickie won a quite staggering 8.4 of his duels per game while playing in League One in the 2019/20 season, while also averaging a relatively impressive 4.8 clearances, 2.5 interceptions and one tackle per match, as per Sofascore.
Does Dickie start for Newcastle?
The central defender enjoyed a fine campaign with Oxford, making a total of 46 appearances over all competitions, scoring one goal and providing a further four assists (via Transfermarkt).
However, the term ended in heartbreak for the club’s captain as his side lost out 2-1 to Wycombe Wanderers at Wembley Stadium in the League One play-off final, after an equaliser from Mark Sykes to cancel out an Anthony Stewart opener was scored in vein as Joe Jacobsen netted the winner for the Chairboys from the penalty spot (per BBC).
Nevertheless, the Toon have missed out on signing the 24-year old and will now have to pursue other targets in the centre-back area.
