Newcastle United are working on a deal to rival both Everton and Fulham for Norwich City defender Ben Godfrey, with Steve Bruce keen to add the talented defender to his squad, according to Football Insider.
Godfrey is a player who is attracting plenty of attention following Norwich’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of last season. The defender’s profile has increased having made 30 Premier League appearances for Daniel Farke’s side last term, after he played a crucial role in the club’s promotion from the Championship in the 2018/19 campaign, as per Transfermarkt.
Everton are the club, at the moment, who have shown the most amount of interest in the 22-year-old with the Toffees thought to be preparing an offer between £20 million and £25 million for Godfrey, according to Football Insider. That means that if they are to rival their Premier League opponents, Newcastle could have to match such an offer.
Looking more closely at Godfrey’s stats from last campaign, the defender managed to average 0.7 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per match, whilst he also averaged an impressive 4.9 clearances per game (via Sofascore). Those stats were accumulated despite him being part of a struggling Norwich defence.
At the age of 22, the centre-back has plenty of potential to be developed further and grow into a player worth more than the £20 to £25 million price tag it might take to get him out of Norwich. Having had last season’s experience to get to grips with the Premier League, he could arrive knowing the division inside out which would be a real plus for Newcastle.
The Magpies are needing defensive reinforcements and Godfrey is a player that could improve their squad. He would arrive with a point to prove having suffered relegation last season with Norwich and would already have a familiar face alongside him in the shape of Jamal Lewis.
Newcastle, though might have to move fast to beat Everton to his signature before the transfer deadline.
