Newcastle United are set to miss out on Bertrand Traore as Sky Sports have reported that Aston Villa have agreed a transfer fee of an initial £17 million plus an added £2 million in add-ons with Olympique Lyon to sign the former Chelsea man in the summer window.
Indeed, the Tyneside club were reported to be one of several teams from the Premier League, including Crystal Palace, Everton and Leicester City, interested in signing Traore, but it looks as if Dean Smith’s Villa will be the ones who will get his signature over the dotted line.
Does Traore start for Newcastle?
In 35 games in all competitions for Lyon in the 2019/20 term, the Burkina Faso international scored four goals and made a further five assists, according to Transfermarkt.
He was also part of the squad that got to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in the last season, as Lyon rather impressively beat Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City and Maurizio Sarri’s Juventus in the knockout stages of the prestigious European tournament before eventually being turned over 3-0 by eventual winners Bayern Munich.
At just 25 years of age as well, there is arguably still time for Traore to improve as a football player, but it looks as if this will not be under the guidance of Steve Bruce at St. James’ Park.
Nonetheless, the Magpies will now be able to fully focus on pursuing other possible transfer targets before the window shuts, and they may be able to find a better or a cheaper option than Traore to come in as a winger.
