Newcastle United are set to miss out on Eberechi Eze as the Daily Telegraph has reported that fellow Premier League rivals Crystal Palace have had a bid worth £19.5 million accepted for the Queens Park Rangers ace.
Indeed, Steve Bruce’s team were said to have held a strong interest in Eze, with West Bromwich Albion and West Ham United also interested in bringing the QPR man to the top flight.
Would Eze start for Newcastle?
Eze enjoyed a relatively impressive 2019/20 season in the EFL Championship, scoring a total of 14 goals and making a further eight assists mainly playing from midfield, having featured in all 46 games, as per Transfermarkt.
The England Under-21 international also averaged more shots, key passes, crosses and long balls per league match than fellow attacking midfield players Allan Saint-Maximin, Christian Atsu and Miguel Almiron managed in England’s highest division in the last term, according to Whoscored.
Yes, there is a difference in the quality of the respective leagues, but Eze has shown that he could potentially make the step up to the EPL, albeit it looks like it will be with the Eagles under Roy Hodgson.
At just 22 years of age as well, the Englishman still arguably has a lot of time and potential to adapt to the demands of the league.
However, it looks as if the Magpies have missed out on their target providing that CPFC can agree the necessary terms of the deal after already having a transfer fee agreed.
Bruce will surely be looking at other players now in the market who play in Eze’s position.
