According to odds courtesy of SkyBet, via the Sunderland Echo, Newcastle United have been tipped as outside contenders to join the race for Udinese midfielder Rodrigo de Paul – with the Argentine currently being targeted by fellow Premier League club Leeds United.
De Paul, who is reportedly valued at £31 million, is a wanted man by some of England’s top flight as the 2020/2021 Premier League season gets underway – and Newcastle have now been tipped to join the race for his signature as unlikely 33/1 outsiders.
Are Newcastle United going to make another signing this summer?
Yes, more to come
No, pipe dream
After a mixed start to the campaign, which begun with a resounding 2-0 victory away to West Ham, Steve Bruce’s side most recently fell victim to a dismal 3-0 defeat at home to Brighton – potentially highlighting the fact that further additions could be necessary.
So far, the Magpies have managed to land a plethora of Premier League top level signings in Jamal Lewis, Callum Wilson, Jeff Hendrick and Ryan Fraser (Transfermarkt) – but the Seagulls still managed to expose some defensive frailties at the weekend at St. James’ Park.
Regardless, as per these latest odds, Newcastle have been touted to potentially join the race for attacking midfielder De Paul given their lack of creativity in the middle of the park – with Miguel Almiron being their only real outlet more centrally.
Amassing 17 caps for his country overall, pundit Paul Robinson has also waxed lyrical over his potential Premier League pedigree in past interviews, lauding him as a ‘top player’ who would be a ‘great signing’ for Leeds or indeed any club in the top flight (MOT Leeds News).
Of course, his sky high valuation remains a huge obstacle for Newcastle if they were to lodge a pursuit, leaving little wonder why their odds are currently 33/1.
