Noel Whelan has lauded Arsenal ace Rob Holding as he closes in on a potential loan move to Newcastle United.
Indeed, this comes after The Athletic journalist and Gunners transfer guru David Ornstein reported that the deal to take him to St. James’ Park was close, as all fingers seem to be pointing in the direction that the Englishman will play in the North East in the new 2020/21 term.
Whelan believes that he would be a good signing for Steve Bruce and the Tyneside club and expressed to Football Insider his thoughts on the potential deal:
“I think it would be a smart signing,” the former Leeds United forward claimed.
“Steve Bruce knows that he needs to bolster that defence and Rob Holding can play in a number of positions. He can play at right-back, centre-half and on the right of a three. Lascelles had a number of injury problems last year and they need to cover that base.
“In Holding they would be getting a very good British defender who knows the league extremely well. You forget that he is still a great age because he has been around for such a long time. They would be getting a fantastic player.
“Another very shrewd signing by Steve Bruce. You can see that Holding is a leader as well. Like Jeff Hendrick, that is a no brainer for me.”
Indeed, the potential loan deal is one that would arguably suit both parties involved. Holding is relatively experienced in the Premier League, having played in 39 games in the top flight over the last four seasons, as per Transfermarkt.
The central defender also averaged more passes per match and with a higher success rate than Fabian Schar, Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles in England’s highest division in the 2019/20 campaign, suggesting that he is more composed on the ball and is comfortable in playing out from the back if and when needed.
Does Holding start for Newcastle?
In addition, Mikel Arteta’s team currently have seven other senior centre-backs on their books at the moment, and so perhaps it is a wise idea from AFC as well to let Holding go out on loan to the Magpies in the summer transfer window.
Nonetheless, Whelan believes that the Toon would be making a shrewd signing in the 24-year old, and based off of his stats, it is arguably hard to disagree with the pundit.
