Alan Hutton has dropped a big transfer claim on Tyler Roberts and whether he would be a good fit at Newcastle United.

The Lowdown: Newcastle eye Roberts

As per Football Insider, the St. James' Park faithful are closely monitoring Roberts ahead of a potential transfer from Leeds United in the summer.

He is out of contract at Elland Road in 2022 and is yet to agree an extension, and so Marcelo Bielsa's team may view a potential deal as an ideal opportunity to cash in on him now in order to gain some value.

The Latest: Hutton backs Roberts to Newcastle

Speaking to Football Insider, Hutton, who is now a pundit after playing for the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Rangers, has backed the Magpies in their pursuit of Roberts, and claims that he has what it takes to become a top player:

“I think he does. He doesn’t start week in, week out for Leeds but when he does, you can see he’s got ability.

“He’s comfortable on the ball and for me, that’s the type of player that Newcastle have missed. Yes, they’ve got Almiron, Saint-Maximin and Callum Wilson who are strong runners. They get forward from defensive positions really well, great engines.

“But sometimes I just feel in that midfield for Newcastle they need someone who’s comfortable and can get on the ball.

“Shelvey has got it in the locker but sometimes I think it’s a mobility thing. He doesn’t really get around the pitch as much as you would want and I think they need that.

“Tyler Roberts, coming off the back of a Bielsa schooling, has got that in abundance. He can move, he can see a pass. It doesn’t surprise me that Newcastle are looking at him.”

The Verdict: Newcastle should sign Roberts

Roberts is certainly a player who would add to the Tyneside club's squad, and with that added experience of playing in the Premier League, he would not have to adapt to the demands of the top flight.

Also, at just 22 years of age, Roberts will only get even better over the next few years, as his former boss Tony Pulis branded him as a ‘very talented’ player back in March, which is high praise from a manager with so much experience, especially in the EPL.

His versatility is also a quality which would be useful to have around in Steve Bruce’s squad, and so the summer may present itself an opportunity that the Toon should not pass up on.
