Newcastle United supporters have been pretty despondent in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their team go down 2-0 at in-form Liverpool on Saturday, a result which saw them slip a place closer to the Premier League’s relegation zone.

Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Champions League chasing Reds unbeaten in their preceding four league games, which included their impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester United at St James’ Park. Yet the Magpies were unable to pull off another scalp on Saturday as goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealed a routine win for Jurgen Klopp’s side, a result which saw the North East giants slip to 16th place in the Premier League, albeit still two points clear of danger.

As such, there have been many frustrated Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, yet they are likely to be intrigued by a recent report from The Newcastle Chronicle, which seemingly provides answers for Magpies supporters regarding Aleksandar Mitrovic’s regular exclusion from the first team in the first half of the campaign.

The 23-year-old only earned six Premier League appearances for the Magpies prior to a loan move to Fulham back in January, this all despite Benitez’s men struggling for goals in the opening half of the season.

And many Newcastle fans in the Tavern were bemused as to why Mitrovic rarely got a chance under the Spaniard, but recent revelations suggest that the Serbia international did get a chance to impress the Newcastle boss, only for the striker to fail to impress in training to earn a spot ahead of the other forward options.

As such, the 23-year-old was sent out on loan to the Championship side during the winter window, and while he might be impressing at Craven Cottage, it appears as though the opportunity was there for Mitrovic to stake his claim for a regular spot at Newcastle.

Landlord’s verdict: Many Newcastle supporters were left bewildered in the first half of the season by Aleksandar Mitrovic’s lack of first team involvement, despite the Magpies’ struggles in front of goal.

The 23-year-old was subsequently loaned out to Fulham in the January transfer window, but reports have detailed some answers by suggesting that the striker was given an opportunity to prove his worth to manager Rafa Benitez during training, only to fail to hit the level set by the other forwards at the club.

And these revelations are sure to intrigue our resident Magpies fans, with the future seemingly unclear for the Newcastle fan favourite.
