Newcastle United supporters have been pretty frustrated in the Transfer Tavern in the last few days after seeing their side lose 2-0 at Champions League chasing Liverpool on Saturday, a result which saw the North East giants slip a place closer to the Premier League’s bottom three.
Rafa Benitez’s men went into their clash with the Merseyside heavyweights unbeaten in their preceding four league games, which included their impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester United at St James’ Park. Yet the Magpies were unable to produce another shock on Saturday as strikes from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane sealed an easy win for Jurgen Klopp’s side, a result which saw Benitez’s team slip to 16th place in the Premier League, albeit still two points clear of danger.
Consequently, there have been many despondent Newcastle fans in the Tavern in recent times, several of whom are hoping that their side can bounce back with all three points against fellow relegation candidates Southampton on Saturday.
In the meantime though, there has been much for our resident Magpies supporters to get their teeth into, not least recent reports suggesting that Burnley’s James Tarkowski could get an England call-up for the upcoming friendlies against the Netherlands and Italy.
And while the Clarets defender has enjoyed a fine campaign this term, England boss Gareth Southgate should forget about the 25-year-old and instead select Newcastle captain Jamaal Lascelles in his next squad.
And that’s because the 24-year-old has been absolutely outstanding for the Magpies this term, and looks set to play as big a part as anyone in trying to keep the North East giants in the Premier League this season.
Ultimately, the Englishman has comfortably become the club’s number one centre-back this season with 24 league appearances so far, with his absence in the other five only as a result of injury.
And with several impressive efforts in his own penalty area, as well as timely contributions at the other end, the 24-year-old has led the side brilliantly this season, and has all the capabilities to go on and become a top-quality centre-back at Premier League level.
And with there some question marks over the likes of Gary Cahill and Michael Keane, there appears to be an opportunity for someone to earn a spot in Southgate’s 23-man squad, and Lascelles has certainly earned the chance to stake a claim for a place at this summer’s World Cup.
Reports suggest that Harry Maguire and John Stones are all but set to make the final squad, but the final position in Southgate’s back three remains up for grabs – Lascelles deserves a shot at it.
And while Tarkowski has been in fine form for Burnley this term, Southgate should forget about the Clarets defender and instead select Newcastle’s £6.3 million-rated Lascelles (as per Transfermarkt) in his next England squad.
