The Newcastle United fans here in the Transfer Tavern have had a frustrating season. Indeed, there have been some moments to remember in the top flight, though a lack of consistency has undermined their attempts to put serious daylight between themselves and the relegation zone.
Perhaps the one player to have epitomised that most is Jonjo Shelvey. Fantastic at times, the former Liverpool and Swansea City midfielder has let himself down with some seemingly lazy performances, as well as the odd red card. Heavily criticised for his lack of involvement to keep Bournemouth from netting a second during the 2-2 draw on the weekend, he’s a divisive figure amongst our punters clad in black and white.
However, reports from the Daily Mail have shed an interesting light on his current predicament. According to them, the 25-year-old has been playing through the pain barrier in recent weeks, perhaps explaining what many saw as laziness down on the south coast on Saturday.
A groin injury is understood to have been flaring up in recent weeks and the ex-Charlton youngster is thought to have been receiving pain-killing injections, perhaps putting an end to suggestions he’s not up for a relegation battle. As you can imagine, he’s gone up in the estimations of our local Geordies.
