Newcastle United fans here in the Tavern are hoping their side can ensure Premier League survival this season, as a drop down to the Championship would be a disaster for the Magpies.
Rafa Benitez was always going to be up against it after failing to bring in a sufficient amount of players in the January transfer window, as cracks are beginning to appear in Newcastle United’s bid for survival. Indeed, the Magpies suffered a 2-0 defeat against Premier League high flyers Liverpool in their last outing, in a performance that saw many of our local northerners hurl abuse at the players.
However, it’s vital that the supporters can get behind the team for the remainder of the season, with negative vibes potentially costing the side dearly in their attempts to avoid the drop. Indeed, the poor performances displayed by many of the Newcastle players over the past couple of weeks has caused for major concern, as the Magpies cannot afford a slip-up at this point in their season.
Therefore, with crunch matches against Southampton, Huddersfield and West Bromwich Albion still to come for Newcastle, here’s a look at TWO players that need to improve their performances to help ensure safety…
Ayoze Perez has had one of his worst Premier League campaigns since he joined Newcastle United back in 2014, with his poor return of two goals thus far playing a huge part in the worrying position that the club currently finds itself in.
Indeed, the Spaniard hasn’t scored since bagging the winner on New Year’s Day against Stoke City, which has caused for many of our locals to question his future at the club after such a poor showing.
Therefore, Newcastle United will need to see huge improvements in his performances from here on in until the end of the season, as he could potentially be playing for his future at St James’ Park.
Matt Ritchie was influential in Newcastle United’s rise to the Premier League last season, with his playmaking abilities creating a countless amount of assists for the side.
However, he’s gone under the radar so far this season for the Magpies as he continues to struggle, with goals no longer a regular feature in the Scotsman’s game having netted his first against Manchester United recently.
Therefore, if the Magpies are to avoid a return back to the Championship, then Matt Ritchie will need to rediscover his form from last year to give them any hope.
