Report: Transfer guru Sven Mislintat explains reasons for Arsenal exit
Arsenal’s former head of recruitment Sven Mislintat has recently revealed the story behind his departure from the Emirates Stadium.
Mislintat lasted little over a year in his role at the club, when he left prematurely this February, following Arsenal’s plans to appoint a technical director.
The 46-year-old has now revealed the reasons for his exit, which came just months after former chief executive Ivan Gazidis had left Arsenal for a similar role at AC Milan.
Speaking to 11Freunde he said (via Arseblog): “Last summer there were leadership changes at Arsenal. It had actually been agreed that I would become technical director, so then I would be around the team on a daily basis. But the new leadership had their own agenda and other candidates. On top of that, we had different approaches.”
The appointment of Mislintat was followed by the arrival of Raul Sanllehi – who became head of football – alongside Vinai Venkatesham becoming managing director, after Gazidis’ departure to the San Siro.
It appears that this saw a change of direction that prompted Mislintat to jump ship.
“Arsenal actually owns their own data company,” he said. “That meant that we acted independently, we knew about all markets and players in all positions that came into question. However, the new leadership work more strongly with what they are offered from clubs or agents through their own networks.”
With the difference in approach cutting Mislintat’s Arsenal career short, the scouting guru can now be found at second-tier German side Stuttgart.
Arsenal’s signings during Mislintat’s reign may leave the club wondering what might have been given the success of some of his finds – with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang winning the Golden Boot in his first full season and the likes of youngster Matteo Guendouzi earning rave reviews at times during his brief Arsenal career.
And with The Gunners lacking in deals so far this summer, perhaps the effect of Mislintat’s departure (not to mention Gazidis’) could be greater than you might expect.
