Arsenal have joined rivals Spurs in the race to sign Italian midfielder Nicolo Zaniolo, according to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Calciomercato).
The 20-year-old midfielder is one the Italian game’s standout young talents, and he has attracted plenty of admiring glances (Gazzetta dello Sport have also named Juventus as another interested party) thanks to his performances for current club Roma during the course of last season.
“Roma and Italy’s most exciting teenager since Francesco Totti,” was how Goal described him in the previous term.
Zaniolo, who can play both in a central and right hand sided attacking midfield role, as shown on WhoScored, has been identified by Spurs as someone they fancy adding to their squad. However, it looks like the north London club won’t have it all their own way, as rivals Arsenal have appeared to entered the fray.
Spurs have already sealed the big-money signing of Tanguy Ndombele, but look keen to keep strengthening their ranks based on the above report.
However, with Arsenal now entering the race to sign Zaniolo, Spurs could face a real fight in their pursuit of the 20-year-old.
Zaniolo really held his own in Roma’s first team last season, making 36 appearances in all competitions for the Serie A outfit (as per Transfermarkt). And his playmaking ability, something Goal also highlighted in the previous campaign, could be on display at either the Emirates or the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next term.
