Arsenal: Sheffield United eye move for Calum Chambers

Calum Chambers is a loan target for Premier League new boys Sheffield United, according to The Mirror.

Manager Chris Wilder has made an enquiry to sign the 24-year-old, as he looks to bolster his defensive options ahead of the close of the transfer window on Thursday.

Any move for Chambers will depend on the response from Gunners boss Unai Emery, who is looking to bolster his own back-line this week.

The Arsenal centre-back spent last season on loan at Fulham as the club got relegated to the Championship.

Any move away from Arsenal for Chambers would suggest the opposite of what has been going on in pre-season. The England international has started each of the last five pre-season friendlies for Arsenal, suggesting he remains firmly in Emery’s plans for the new season.

As well as Chambers’ pre-season, there have been reports that Laurent Koscielny is in talks with two Ligue 1 clubs and Arsenal are in talks with a number of clubs over the sale of Shkodran Mustafi. Looking at Chamber’s regular appearances and Arsenal’s want to sell other centre-halves and it seems Chambers will be an important player for the club next season.

Chambers’ stats from last season show he could be a good bet in the centre of Emery’s defence. the Englishman made the joint-most tackles and more interceptions than any other player in Arsenal’s squad from last season, showing he has the defensive nous to play for the club.

After weighing up all the factors, Arsenal would be silly to get rid of Chambers on loan. The England youth international has shown that he has all the attributes to perform for the club and should be afforded the chance to do so.
