There is no hiding the fact that Celtic need a right-back this summer. The Bhoys waved goodbye to both Mikael Lustig and Jeremy Toljan at the end of the season, with the former leaving for Gent (BBC) whilst the latter returned to Germany after his loan, and now it looks like Neil Lennon is looking at poaching Sheffield United’s George Baldock.
The defender spent last season playing on the right-hand side of Chris Wilder’s 3-5-2 system as a wing-back capable of getting forward, yet this summer it looks like the Hoops want him to fill their hole at right-back, as per The Sun, after missing out on Jack Stacey, who’s signed for Bournemouth from Luton Town (BBC).
Celtic aren’t the only ones who are keen to poach Baldock from the Championship runners-up, as Stoke City, who also held an interest in Stacey before his Cherries move, are keen on bringing in the 26-year-old defender as Nathan Jones prepares the Potters for their second season in the Championship since their relegation from the Premier League.
The only recognised right-sided defender they have at the club at the moment is Anthony Ralston, and whilst the youngster has impressed previously, winning praise off of then-Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers for his performance against Neymar in a Champions League clash with PSG in 2017, BT Sport, the Hoops need another defender.
Going into the campaign with just one recognised right-back probably isn’t the smartest of moves and Neil Lennon surely knows that. It might be hard to secure the signing of Baldock given his involvement in the Blades’ promotion-winning season last year, but with his club holding out for £1.5m, as per The Sun’s story, it’s a very reasonable fee.
The player himself has had a varied career, spending six years at MK Dons between 2011 and 2017 where he enjoyed five separate loan spells, taking him to the likes of Tamworth, Northampton Town and IBV in Iceland before being sold to Sheffield United two years ago.
Despite winning promotion last season, the £900,000-rated ace, as per Transfermarkt, is yet to win any silverware in his career and Celtic seems to be the place to be for trophy-winning. The last three years have brought nine domestic trophies as the Hoops have won an unprecedented treble-treble, securing their sixth, seventh and eighth successive Scottish Premiership titles in the process.
It’s now up to Neil Lennon to make this one happen and the Bhoys would benefit from having the 26-year-old on their books. Last season was a strong one for Baldock in the Championship. After scoring in the Blades’ opening game he went on to make 27 appearances, chipping in three assists even if he failed to find the net again after their first game.
Whether or not he finds his way to Parkhead is yet to be seen, but this looks like a move that suits all parties as Baldock would be the club’s senior right-back with young Ralston in reserve, it would also see Baldock drop to right-back after a spell of playing as more of a wing-back/winger under Chris Wilder.
