Everton have had a largely quiet summer thus far, with former loanee Andre Gomes the only incoming to date. However, there could be a fresh face on the horizon, with the potential incoming of Barcelona’s Malcom.
French outlet RMC have reported Everton are set to make a substantial bid of £35m for the Barcelona winger who spent the majority of last season sat on the bench.
They state Marco Silva has made the Brazilian a priority signing this summer but face competition from Arsenal, who have reportedly held discussions but are yet to submit a bid.
Aged just 21-years-old at the time, Barcelona completed a £36.5m move for the Bordeaux winger last summer after he scored 12 goals and assisted seven in an impressive 35 league games (per Transfermarkt).
However, his move to the Catalan giants has to date proven uninspiring, with the winger scoring just one league goal and four in all competitions. The competition for a place, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Ousmane Dembele and Philippe Coutinho, has been a step too far.
That isn’t to slate his ability, however. Malcom showcased his raw talent in abundance while in France. He regularly utilised his skill, particularly the nutmeg, to cut in and shoot from wide, scoring plenty from distance and getting the crowd off their seats in the process (per talkSPORT). His style is in many ways is similar to Lionel Messi’s, perhaps a reason why he has struggled at Barcelona.
The forward is still young and has plenty to offer going forward, especially for a club like Everton that could certainly do with a winger of his calibre.
The Toffees were rigid in defence last season, conceding just 46 goals, bettered only by the top four (per Sky Sports). However, their attacking form was not quite so formidable, albeit not terrible. They scored 54 goals, significantly lower than any of the top six sides.
Primarily, they are missing a top forward to finally replace Romelu Lukaku. However, Richarlison admits himself he is wasted up top and provides more goal threat than Bernard, who largely occupied the left wing role last season.
Bernard scored just the one and assisted three in 34 league games, and although he did improve as the season went on, the figures are still below par. Similarly, Theo Walcott grabbed just five goals in what was a thoroughly unimpressive campaign (per Premier League.com) .
Malcom, therefore, would represent a real coup for Everton and a significant improvement on the likes of Bernard and Walcott. If the option is there, it’s a no-brainer.
