Liverpool are prepared to shell out €75 million (£67.44 million) for Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio.
Spanish outlet El Desmarque report that Jurgen Klopp is keen to improve on his Champions League winning squad from last season and that the German has identified the Los Blancos playmaker as a target for this summer.
The report also states, though, that Real Madrid are not looking to sell Asensio, however, if a considerable offer was to come in for the Spanish international there is a possibility the 23-year-old could depart the La Liga giants.
With a Transfermarkt valuation of £54 million, Asensio would no doubt be an expensive signing for Liverpool in a transfer window where the Liverpool Echo report that the Reds might already be done with their summer dealings despite bringing in just one new player in the form of Sepp van den Berg (per Liverpool’s official website).
Indeed, Asensio joining Liverpool would be both a financially stressful move for the Merseyside club as well as one that wouldn’t benefit either the player or the reigning Champions League holders.
Looking at the Spaniard’s average positional starts for Real Madrid via Transfermarkt, it is easy to spot out that Asensio is largely a left-winger who can play occasionally on the right as well as centrally, but when you look at his goal contribution numbers compared to Mohamed Salah’s and Sadio Mane’s, it shows that the youngster won’t be an improvement.
Looking at numbers from Transfermarkt, Asensio scored six goals and assisted seven for Los Blancos last season, whereas Salah managed 27 goals and 13 assists whilst Mane scored 27 and assisted five in a campaign where both wingers were named Premier League Golden Boot winners (Liverpool’s official website).
Liverpool’s wingers were in blistering form last term, and if Asensio was to sign, it is seemingly likely the Spaniard would be nothing but an expensive bench warmer for the Reds.
