Manchester United could be set to make another big move in the transfer market as they target a deal to sign Lazio midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic.
According to Italian news outlet SportMediaSet, the midfielder’s agent has flown into England for talks with United about a potential deal for a player described by Italian football expert James Horncastle (per BBC Sport) as ‘the closest thing Serie A still has’ to Paul Pogba, who has obviously been linked away from Old Trafford this summer.
Milinkovic-Savic has seen his reputation blossom with his performances at Lazio after moving from Genk in 2015.
The 24-year-old has knocked in 22 goals in Serie A during his time with the Italian giants and has previously been linked with the likes of Juventus and PSG following his performances. With comparisons made to Pogba as previously mentioned, the Serbian international could be a replacement should the Frenchman eventually depart.
Comparing the two on WhoScored, there isn’t much to split them in terms of attacking stats, with Pogba only marginally recording more shots (3 to 2.5), key passes (1.6 to 1.5) and dribbles (1.7 to 1.1) on average per league game last season, despite playing 607 more minutes.
Crucially, Milinkovic-Savic was dispossessed fewer times (2.5 to 1.5), an aspect of Pogba’s game criticised in the past.
Following Horncastle’s comparison, as well as the relative similarity in terms of statistics, United could be onto something if Milinkovic-Savic really is a target.
