Barcelona are set to beat Premier League duo Manchester United and Liverpool to the signing of Junior Firpo, according to Sport.
Manager Ernesto Valverde is also said to be considering the signings of David Alaba, Ricardo Rodriguez and Raphael Guerreiro as left-backs to compete with Jordi Alba next season.
The links with Junior Firpo would make sense for Manchester United, who currently don’t have an out-and-out left-back to compete with Luke Shaw. Marcos Rojo was initially signed as a left-sided defender when he joined the club back in 2014, but there is uncertainty regarding the Argentine’s future.
Last season with Real Betis, Firpo played 25 games at left midfield and four games as a left-back. Firpo saw good success while playing left-back, winning two of his four games, including a 1-0 victory over Atletico Madrid. While four games for Real Betis may not seem enough, for Real Betis’ reserve team, Firpo played 44 games, with 28 at left-back and nine at centre-back.
Given the outstanding versatility of the 22-year-old, signing him should be a no-brainer for Manchester United. Firpo can play multiple positions in which manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs players, so to condense it into one player would save money.
As mentioned above, Shaw remains as the club’s only left-back, so signing Firpo would give the Englishman some competition. In midfield, the Red Devils have lost Ander Herrera and there remains speculation around Paul Pogba’s future, and with Firpo’s experience at left midfield, he could possibly be used as a makeshift in the middle if the worst comes to the worst.
Firpo represents great value for Manchester United, and the club should do everything in their power to ensure that they can make signing him a reality.
