Norwich City new boys Josip Drmic and Patrick Roberts could play in the club’s opening game of the Premier League season versus Liverpool tonight.
Drmic hasn’t enjoyed the greatest of success in the last few seasons, only starting 12 games in the Bundesliga for Borussia Mönchengladbach. His signing looks to act as a backup to the imperious Teemu Pukki, who hit 29 goals in the Championship last season.
Roberts has also been suffering from a similar fate to his Swiss teammate. The on-loan Manchester City man has played just 27 league games in his last two seasons. In that time he has scored just one goal and assisted six.
Meanwhile, his direct competition for a place on the right-wing, Emiliano Buendia, is coming off the back of a sensational season last campaign. The Argentine scored eight goals and assisted a further 12 to help Norwich City achieve promotion.
Despite being fit, Roberts and Drmic should be used as intended, as backups to Buendia and Pukki. It’s clear to see that over the last few seasons the duo have not played enough game to warrant a starting place in manager Daniel Farke’s side.
It wasn’t just the goal contributions that make the Buendia and Pukki the first-choice players. To have played more than five games, Buendia led Norwich City team in most key passes per game last season with 2.4, while Pukki averaged the most shots per game (2.2).
The two players have shown their quality and deserve to start ahead of the likes of Drmic and Roberts, who still have red flags surrounding them.
