Sheffield United: Blades fall behind Norwich City in the race to sign Javier Ontiveros

Having already secured the services of Phil Jagielka and Luke Freeman for the upcoming campaign, Sheffield United were hoping to complete a deal with Malaga for Javier Ontiveros.

Yet according to ESPN, the Blades have reportedly fallen behind in the race to sign the Spanish winger with Norwich City now favourites to land his signature this summer.

A mainstay in Malaga’s starting eleven last season, Ontiveros provided seven goal contributions in the Segunda Division (via Transfermarkt) as he helped the club reach the play-offs in June.

However, despite scoring and assisting in the first leg of Los Malaguistas’ semi-final clash with Deportivo La Coruna (via Transfermarkt), the 19-year-old was unable to prevent his side from being eliminated from the competition 5-2 on aggregate.

Looking at the above, the £5.4m-rated ace (via Transfermarkt) has clearly shown signs of promise during his fledgeling career.

However, when you consider that he has never played outside of his homeland (via Transfermarkt), signing him would be somewhat of a risk for the Blades to take as there are no guarantees that he will be able to adapt to the pace of the top-flight.

Furthermore, with Footballbh noting that Wilder’s preferred formations are 3-5-2 and 3-4-2-1, it could also be argued that Ontiveros may not be suited to these particular systems which rely on the club’s wing-backs to attack as well as defend.

Considering that George Baldock and Enda Stevens featured in a combined total of 72 games last season (via WhoScored) in these aforementioned positions, usurping either player would be a huge task for any new arrival, let alone someone who has no prior experience of English football.
