Sheffield United: Set to agree deal to sign Dean Henderson on loan

Having already secured the services of Phil Jagielka and Luke Freeman this summer, Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder may be about to secure his third signing of the transfer window in the coming days.

According to the Daily Mirror, the Blades are reportedly set to agree a season-long loan deal with Manchester United for Dean Henderson after the goalkeeper was left out Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour of Australia.

Although the Yorkshire-based outfit initially wanted to bring the 22-year-old in on a permanent deal, the Red Devils were unwilling to sell him on due to the fact that David De Gea is out of contract in 2020 and has yet to commit his future to the club (via the Manchester Evening News).

No stranger to United, the 22-year-old spent the entirety of the 2018/19 campaign at Bramall Lane and was a mainstay in the club’s starting eleven, featuring in all 46 of their Championship fixtures (via Transfermarkt).

Considering that Wilder currently has just one senior goalkeeper at his disposal for the upcoming campaign in the form of Simon Moore, it is not at all surprising that he is looking to bolster his options in this position.

Unquestionably one of the Blades’ star performers last season, Henderson kept a Championship-high 21 clean sheets (via Transfermarkt) whilst he also conceded the joint-least amount of goals (41) in the division.

Whereas there is no doubting that the Premier League represents a huge step up in terms of quality from the second-tier, the fact that he was one of England’s stand-out players in the recent Euro Under-21 Championship suggests that he could be ready to make his mark against the very best.

Particularly impressive in the Three Lions’ 2-1 defeat against France last month, Henderson made five saves which included one from the penalty spot, achieving a WhoScored rating of 8.0.

If the ‘keeper can continue to develop under the guidance of Wilder over the next 10 months, he could play a pivotal role in helping the Blades establish themselves as a Premier League side.
