Stick or twist: Pellegrini has a big decision to make at West Ham this summer

There must be so much going on inside the head of Manuel Pellegrini. He’s got a lot of work to do at the London Stadium this summer, and that’s been made more of immediate concern as a result of the Hammers’ recent poor form. Their loss against Chelsea on Monday summed up many of West Ham’s current issues, with Pellegrini practically needing a miracle to finish inside the top seven in the Premier League this season.

Realistically, with most fans now not expecting to move beyond Wolves in English top flight, attention needs to turn to the summer transfer window, and a recent report from Football Insider has indicated that the Hammers are doing just that. As per Football Insider, West Ham are considering a move for Liverpool defender Nathaniel Clyne, who is currently on loan at Bournemouth.

Clyne doesn’t really have a role to play at Anfield at present, having been effectively forced out of the first team by Trent Alexander-Arnold, hence why Jurgen Klopp was happy to let him depart.

He’s proven that he’s still got the talent to turn out at the highest level whilst with Bournemouth, having become a regular at the Vitality Stadium under Eddie Howe. Offering defensive solidity whilst retaining his trademark offensive flair, Clyne hasn’t lost a step during his various injury problems over the last few years.

It’s no surprise, then, that West Ham are interested in his services – but would he be a suitable choice? It would, of course, most likely mean the end of the road for Pablo Zabaleta, who is a player that Pellegrini has relied upon heavily this season. There’s certainly an argument to suggest that that’s for the best, given that the Argentine is now 34-years-old and past his peak.

However, Pellegrini has regularly opted to rely on more experienced talent in his team; and so is Clyne a worthy choice in that sense? Well, at 28-years-old, he has got a lot of experience behind him, and he’s still in the prime of his career. That could be a perfect combination.

But who would get the nod for you? Would you rather see Clyne or Zabaleta in the West Ham first team? Let us know below…
