This article forms part of our Transfer Scenario feature, which is where Football Transfer Tavern takes a look at a recent transfer rumour and suggests what the potential consequences would be, should a deal be completed.
Here, we look at a done deal – in this case, David De Gea’s new contract at Manchester United, suggesting what Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have been faced with had the Spaniard turned down an opportunity to extend his Old Trafford career.
United are yet to flex the financial muscle handed to them by Inter Milan when they paid for Romelu Lukaku’s Old Trafford exit in August, and with De Gea otherwise leaving a gap between the sticks, Solskjaer may have made a new No1 his main priority, with Atletico Madrid ‘keeper Jan Oblak – currently rated at £90m by Transfermarkt – previously linked with a move which would be identical to the one De Gea made from the Spanish capital.
Strikeforce remains bare
That could have the knock-on effect of United’s lack of options up front taking a backseat behind the search for a new first-choice goalkeeper.
While a team of Manchester United’s financial might may be able to stomach more than one marquee signing in one summer (with two of their three summer signings costing almost £130m combined), the possibility that their attack may not become a priority could lead to the strikeforce not being added to in the way it would otherwise have done.
There can be little arguing that De Gea’s new deal removes any uncertainty over his future, allowing for a clear mind ahead of the remainder of the Premier League season, which is to be followed by the European Championships.
If talk of a move away or rumours about his commitment were brought into question, it could have had the opposite effect. And ahead of a European Championship campaign which has seen the Spaniard’s No1 spot come under threat from compatriot Kepa Arrizabalaga, perhaps prolonging uncertainty over his future would further hinder his chances of earning his place back between the sticks for La Roja.
