West Ham’s deal to sign Maxi Gomez for a proposed club-record fee is now off.
Sky Sports News report that that Hammers offered Celta Vigo the £45 million needed to activate Gomez’s release clause, however, the two clubs couldn’t agree to a payment structure for the player, allowing the Uruguayan striker to join Valencia instead.
West Ham submitted a late offer for Gomez following the departure of Marko Arnautovic this week to Shanghai SIPG for a reported £22.4 million according to BBC Sport.
With Gomez now off the market, Manuel Pellegrini will need to turn his attention to signing another striker with the Hammers now only having one recognised No.9 in the squad in Javier Hernandez, who he himself could be heading for the exit door (per Football Italia).
Indeed, the Celta Vigo man, who is valued on Transfermarkt at £36 million, hasn’t been the only striker West Ham have targeted this transfer window. The Hammers have recently been linked by the Telegraph with former Manchester City centre-forward Mario Balotelli, who is now a free agent following his release from Marseille, as well as AC Milan’s Andre Silva as per Football London via Calcio Mercato.
With Pellegrini in need of a striker heading into the new Premier League season in under a month, the Hammers should be ramping up efforts to fill in the voids left in the squad by the likes of Arnautovic, Lucas Perez and potentially Hernandez, who combined to score 25 goals last campaign in all competitions (per Transfermarkt).
Time is running out for West Ham, and the club needs to move quickly to replenish the squad with attacking talent.
