West Ham United look set to miss out on another long-term transfer target this summer with Gary Medel set to complete a move elsewhere, according to a report by Fanatik (via Sport Witness).
The Besiktas defensive midfielder is expected to join Olympique de Marseille after the Hammers could not reach an agreement with the experienced player.
The Chile international has reportedly been a long-term target of Manuel Pellegrini’s; however, he is not the first target the manager looks set to miss out on this summer.
The experienced Chile international was thought to be keen on a return to the Premier League following a spell with Cardiff City in 2013/14, yet the fact that he is now heading to France’s Ligue 1 suggests West Ham were not willing to try and meet what the player was demanding and ultimately cost them.
Even aside from the cover and competition he could have provided as both a midfielder or defender, the idea that players are opting to move elsewhere does not look good.
That, along with Gomez seemingly heading to Valencia, means it’s been a bad week for the club as they try to build towards reaching European football, a target set out by Manuel Pellegrini earlier this year.
West Ham fans, do you consider it a worrying trend that the club is failing to get long-term targets over the line this summer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!
