Daniel Adshead – his career so far
Daniel Adshead is still very much a fresh signing for Norwich City but definitely one of the most exciting ones to don their colours as of late. The Canaries actually swooped in to get the youngster from Rochdale in the summer of 2019 and the now 18-year-old midfielder hasn’t looked back since, impressing on his journey so far and clearly turning some heads along the way as well.
But the majority of his short career has been spent precisely at his former club, Rochdale. Adshead started training within their youth ranks when he was 14 years of age and advanced through their ranks quite quickly. In fact, even at such a young age, there were some big teams around Europe snooping around and trying to acquire his services.
In 2016, he made his debut for Rochdale U18 squad aged just 15 but he also didn’t stop there and the following year, he made another leap forward, travelling with the first team to their pre-season camp in Tenerife in July 2017. Shortly after that, another recognition of his incredible talent would spring up.
In September 2017, he became the club’s youngest ever player to appear in the EFL Trophy aged 16 years and 17 days. Adshead ended up playing a total of 25 games for Rochdale, even scoring one goal and assisting further two despite being a teenager at that time.
He was scouted and then signed by the Canaries in the summer of 2019, slotting right into Norwich City’s U18 squad, but he moved up pretty quickly. Since his arrival, the now 18-year-old lad has been quite impressive, moving up in the world after only two appearances for the young development squad.
After being registered as a U23 player, he managed to tally 18 appearances, rattling the inside of the opposition’s net once and putting one assist on his account in the process as well.
Even though he is yet to get his senior team debut, Adshead is definitely one of the players whose future seems rather bright.
Considering he is still a fairly fresh signing for Norwich City, no transfer rumours or transfer news are surrounding the 18-year-old gem. Of course, the biggest question the Canaries are yet to answer is his possible inclusion in the first-team squad.
They have been an exciting team to watch in the Premier League but it’s pretty safe to say their first season back in the top-flight has been anything but easy. Needless to say, that would be quite a harsh environment for such a young player to walk into.
Still, it will be interesting to see any kind of Norwich City news pop out on the youngster as we prepare for the return of football and the remainder of the 2019/20 campaign.
Adshead is a highly technical midfielder that can boast with great creativity and excellent first touch. He is mostly deployed in central areas but can also fill in the gaps out wide and even further up the pitch, slotting right behind the centre-forward.
When he is on the ball, he usually shows great composure and can deploy deadly passes into the final third as well as successfully orchestrate attacks from the deeper areas. The 18-year-old also has a certain dose of pace and acceleration which helps him when he’s the one progressing the ball forward.
Despite being so young, his decision making is also improving and is already on a pretty decent level altogether. Just the fact that he’s calm in possession and doesn’t rush into challenges or actions recklessly is a huge plus on his road towards further development.
