Nottingham Forest are set to open talks to appoint Pep Segura as the club’s new sporting director, according to reports this week.

The Lowdown: Strengthening all departments

The Reds had a hectic summer transfer window, bringing in 22 new additions, but it’s just as important that Evangelos Marinakis strengthens in areas away from the pitch as well as they look to transform into a consistent top flight organisation.

In recent years, CEO Dane Murphy and head of recruitment George Syrianos have done an excellent job behind the scenes, but following a fresh update it sounds like the Premier League owner could be about to bolster his backroom ranks even further.

The Latest: Segura set to meet Marinakis

According to journalist Matteo Moretto (via Nottingham Forest News), Segura is ‘in Athens for talks’ with Marinakis, where a meeting will take place to discuss him joining the club.

It’s reported that the ‘intention’ is for him to head to the Midlands having previously worked as a ‘mentor’ for Steve Cooper, and a deal is 'very close'.

The Verdict: Ideal candidate?

The Forest boss’ job is reported to be under threat after an underwhelming start to the season, but appointing someone who he has an existing relationship with would suggest otherwise.

Segura has an impressive history in the industry, having previously worked for Barcelona, Liverpool and of course Marinakis’ Olympiacos, with some excellent experience under his belt.

Should he join, the Reds will be hoping that he can help change the club’s fortunes on the pitch after a slow start to the season, building for the long-term and ensuring this group of players are not a one hit wonder.
