Nottingham Forest have a verbal agreement to sign Atalanta midfielder Remo Freuler, according to Sky Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg.
The Lowdown: Freuler’s career so far
Since joining the Serie A outfit six-and-a-half years ago, the 30-year-old has played an instrumental part in their rise to prominence in the Italian top flight, having amassed 259 appearances for the club.
After featuring 29 times in the league last season, Freuler also contributed a goal and an assist to Atalanta’s Champions League campaign, leading the team out as captain on two occasions in the group stage.
The midfielder is also a regular in the Switzerland national team, with 46 caps to his name.
The Latest: Verbal agreement reached
According to Plettenberg, Forest have now reached a verbal agreement with Freuler over a move to the Premier League this summer.
Taking to Twitter, the reliable journalist claimed: “News Remo #Freuler: Verbal agreement with @NFFC about a permanent deal since days! The 30 y/o midfielder wants to join #NFFC but negotiations between the clubs ongoing and not easy. Open end. @SkySportDE”
The Verdict: Get it done
When looking at Freuler’s underlying statistics, it is easy to see why Forest boss Steve Cooper is so keen on bringing the versatile midfielder to the City Ground this summer in a potential €10m (£8.5m) move.
As per FBRef, compared with positional peers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year, the 30-year-old ranks in the 93rd percentile for progressive passes, the 86th percentile for passes attempted and progressive carries and the 75th percentile for blocks.
Will Forest stay in the Premier League?
According to The Athletic’s Paul Taylor, one Italian journalist dubbed Freuler the ‘conductor of the orchestra’ due to the midfielder’s ability to dictate play in the middle of the park.
Therefore, if the Reds can get this deal over the line, this would be a brilliant addition to Forest’s squad.
