# Newcastle: Kieran Trippier set to become first January signing

**Newcastle United look set to pip Manchester United in the race to sign Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier, as per [Football Insights](https://twitter.com/Fball_Insights_/status/1470502245489909764).**

### The Lowdown: Trippier in demand…

Trippier, who has been with the Spanish giants since [2019](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/transfers/spieler/95810), is thought to be [open](https://www.90min.com/posts/newcastle-require-huge-financial-package-sign-kieran-trippier) to a Premier League return.

He was first [linked](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/newcastle-united-transfer-rumours/kieran-trippier-eddie-howe-premier-league/) with a move to Newcastle shortly before Eddie Howe’s arrival. [Reports](https://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-10234659/Newcastle-Eddie-Howe-targeting-Kieran-Trippier-signing-ahead-relegation-fight.html) then claimed that Howe wanted to make the right-back his first January signing, with Manchester United also [interested](https://www.90min.com/posts/newcastle-require-huge-financial-package-sign-kieran-trippier).

Aston Villa, Crystal Palace and Everton are also [willing](https://www.90min.com/posts/newcastle-require-huge-financial-package-sign-kieran-trippier) to make a move, but it seems as if a move to Tyneside has been finalised.

### The Latest: PIF’s first signing

[The Mag](https://www.themag.co.uk/2021/12/kieran-trippier-deal-to-newcastle-united-reported-to-be-all-done-and-first-january-signing/) relayed a claim from [Football Insights](https://twitter.com/Fball_Insights_/status/1470502245489909764), who suggested that Trippier is set to become PIF’s first signing after taking over at St James’ Park.

Football Insights’ Twitter [post](https://twitter.com/Fball_Insights_/status/1470502245489909764) on Monday evening believes that a move is ‘all done’, with more information set to come out ‘in the next day or two’.

### The Verdict: Shrewd move

Howe will know exactly what Trippier would bring to his side, with the 31-year-old making 61 appearances in total under him at Burnley, scoring four goals and registering 11 assists in all competitions over two seasons in Lancashire ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/95810/plus/0?saison=&verein=&liga=&wettbewerb=&pos=&trainer_id=10976)).

The Magpies also have just [two](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/kader/verein/762) right-backs on the books compared to [three](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/newcastle-united/kader/verein/762) left-backs, so adding Trippier to his squad would balance thatt out nicely, and it seems as if Howe is going to get his wish.

The England defender has plenty of [international](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/nationalmannschaft/spieler/95810/verein_id/3299) experience and helped Atletico Madrid to the [La Liga title](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/kieran-trippier/erfolge/spieler/95810) last season, so securing his signature seems to be a good starting point as Howe looks to lift Newcastle out of the Premier League relegation zone over the coming months.
