# Tottenham Hotspur: Ollie Watkins ‘desperate’ to join Spurs but Daniel Levy blocked move

**According to a report by [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/watkins-wanted-to-join-tottenham-but-levy-scuppered-deal/), Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins was ‘desperate’ to join Tottenham in the summer but Daniel Levy scuppered a potential deal, with Spurs missing out on the ‘[perfect signing](https://talksport.com/football/755836/tottenham-brentford-ollie-watkins-perfect-signing-transfer/)‘ as a result.**

Watkins, who was targeted by Levy in the summer as one of many striking options, was reportedly eager to sign for Spurs, with [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/watkins-wanted-to-join-tottenham-but-levy-scuppered-deal/) revealing that extensive talks were held over a possible deal.

### Watkins eyed by Spurs

As well as the young Englishman, Tottenham had their eye on other alternative targets like Arkadiusz Milik, Callum Wilson, Habib Diallo and Andrea Belotti ([Alasdair Gold](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-hotspur-alasdair-gold-claims-spurs-are-keeping-options-open-over-new-striker/)).

Eventually, Spurs turned to Benfica striker Carlos Vinicius, signing him on a season-long loan deal with an option to buy for £40m at the end of the season ([Transfermarkt](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/vinicius-joins-spurs-on-loan-second-most-expensive-signing-in-case-of-permanent-deal/view/news/371878)). One of the club’s most noteworthy deals of the summer window, Vinicius comes in to solve the 14-month long wait for a backup striker to Harry Kane.

However, as per [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/watkins-wanted-to-join-tottenham-but-levy-scuppered-deal/), Spurs could have signed Watkins but Levy refused to pay his eventual [£28m fee](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54080315#:~:text=Aston%20Villa%20have%20completed%20the,last%20season%20with%2026%20goals.) despite ‘extensive’ negotiations and the player’s eagerness to make the move.

### Transfer Tavern take

With Watkins starting the season for Villa in fine form, bagging a [hat-trick against Liverpool](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/54313270) recently, Spurs could regret not investing in him further down the line if he continues to impress.

Likened to [Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha](https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/football/sheffield-united/sheffield-united-lowdown-blades-ps20m-rated-target-ollie-watkins-including-key-strengths-wilfried-zaha-comparison-and-more-1343343) at one point, [talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/755836/tottenham-brentford-ollie-watkins-perfect-signing-transfer/) pundit Perry Groves described him as the ‘perfect signing’ for Spurs. Brentford boss Thomas Frank also labelled him a ‘[beast](https://talksport.com/football/756918/ollie-watkins-aston-villa-brentford-ollie-watkins/)‘, evident from his Championship Player of the Year award last season ([talkSPORT](https://talksport.com/football/756918/ollie-watkins-aston-villa-brentford-ollie-watkins/)).

Vinicius could become golden for Tottenham, but only time will tell whether Levy regrets missing out on the in-form Watkins.
