Fixture release day is a date in the calendar that every football fan is both excited for an also dreading.

The uncertainty of who your team will play first, what part of the season will be the toughest and what side will you face on the last day of a long football campaign are tense moments for fans, and even more so for clubs who have been newly promoted.

Luton Town are one of these said sides after claiming back-to-back promotions, and in their first season back in the Championship in over 12 years the club could not have been handed a harder set of fixtures, with the Hatters opening the season with Middlesbrough at home, followed by Cardiff City away, and then West Bromwich Albion at Kenilworth Road.

The remaining fixtures for August get slightly easier with an away trip to also promoted Barnsley in the fourth game of the season, but then the Hatters welcome newly Premier League relegated side Huddersfield Town at home before travelling to Queens Park Rangers for the start of September.

To call Luton’s opening fixtures hard would be an understatement, with the Stoke Sentinel claiming it to be the hardest out of any side in the Championship, but defying the odds is what the Hatters are all about, and getting a few results in the first six games of the season would be a sign of intent from the club.

Luton surprised everyone by achieving back-to-back promotions, and with the motivation from the previous two seasons still in their sails, Graeme Jones’ side can lay down the groundwork for another surprising season with results in their first six fixtures.

Luton fans, can the club surprise the Championship in their opening six games? Let us know!
