Thursday night is set to be the biggest evening in Portsmouth’s season when Sunderland come to town for the second-leg of the League One play-offs.

Promotion has been the main goal for Kenny Jackett’s side all season, and after missing out on an automatic spot up to the Championship in the final league games, it’s now up to the squad to deliver at Fratton Park.

Portsmouth have what it takes to overturn a 1-0 deficit, but with the news that veteran striker Brett Pitman might miss the all-or-nothing match due to injury, it could prove to be the difference between another season in League One or promotion back to the Championship.

Pitman, who is valued at £900,000 on Transfermarkt, missed the first-leg last Saturday and proved to be a massive loss for the team as Portsmouth were unable to threaten Sunderland for most of the game, and Pompey can’t afford to let that happen against on Thursday.

The striker is to have a late fitness test ahead of the vital game, and if Pitman is fit to play then Portsmouth suddenly have a greater chance of progressing against Sunderland.

The Pompey captain has been a reliable goalscorer this season, scoring 11 goals and assisting five in the league and bagging the winning penalty in the shootout against Sunderland in the EFL Trophy final back in March.

Pitman’s impact in the squad has been massive this season, and if the striker is fit enough for the crunch match then Pompey have an easier task in completing a comeback and booking their ticket to Wembley Stadium yet again.

Portsmouth fans, is Pitman's absence from the club costing Pompey promotion? Let us know!
