So, the reason why West Bromwich Albion couldn’t retain Dwight Gayle’s services beyond this season was because of his “Premier League' level contract at Newcastle United. Great.

Indeed, while it’s admirable from the Baggies to discard the marquee player approach and not risk ruining the club's finances as they plot a Premier League return, finding an effective goal-scorer like Gayle is certainly a difficult thing to do.

Now, they’ve already shown a need to be more economical and, as a result, are aiming for a player who can be a relatively cheap replacement for Gayle. That's because, according to reports from the Daily Star earlier this month, the Baggies want to sign Portsmouth sensation Jamal Lowe. Obviously, the 24-year-old was the driving force for Pompey last season in League One, netting 15 times to inspire them into a playoffs place.

The English striker’s apparently available for just over £2million, which is more than affordable for the Baggies. It’s not like his wages will be a problem like it was for the Newcastle loanee and, despite his inexperience, Lowe proved himself as a lethal goal-scorer by lighting League One on fire last season.

Just like Gayle, the 24-year-old’s an extremely agile forward with a real hunger for goals. Lowe’s searing pace, ability to force past defenders and excellent finishing skills make him the mobile striker the Baggies require. Furthermore, he’s also very flexible with his positioning, as his energetic nature allows him to roam around everywhere in the final to create goal-scoring opportunities.

Lowe could be West Brom’s smartest signing of the summer. If given enough freedom to express himself and proper delivery inside the box, the 24-year-old can possibly outdo Gayle’s heroics and turn out a much better long-term investment.
