# Tottenham: Paul Robinson ‘surprised’ by Emerson Royal’s form

**[Tottenham Hotspur](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/) defender Emerson Royal has impressed [Sky Sports pundit](https://www.skysports.com/watch/video/sports/football/12599291/paul-robinson-leeds-survival-destiny-is-in-their-own-hands) Paul Robinson with his brilliant start to the [Premier League](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/premier-league-news/) campaign.**

### The Lowdown: Royal shines for Spurs…

After being [heavily linked](https://www.caughtoffside.com/2022/08/09/tottenham-transfer-news-emerson-royal-could-leave/) with a summer move away from north London, the Brazilian has now cemented his spot in Antonio Conte’s starting XI on a consistent basis.

Royal has [started all six](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/emerson-royal/leistungsdaten/spieler/476344) of the team’s top-flight matches so far this term and earned [rave reviews from members of the media](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-journalist-raves-over-possessed-emerson-royal/) for his latest outing against Fulham on Saturday afternoon.

The former Real Betis star played like a man ‘[possessed](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-hotspur-news/tottenham-journalist-raves-over-possessed-emerson-royal/)‘ according to CBS journalist Chuck Booth, with the 23-year-old’s end product steadily improving. He has already contributed one assist this season, matching his tally from the entirety of 2021/22, when he found the net only once ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/328512/History/Emerson-Royal)).

### The Latest: Robinson praises Royal…

Speaking to [Football Insider](https://www.footballinsider247.com/robinson-surprised-by-emerson-royal-amid-tottenham-transfer-verdict/), former Spurs goalkeeper Robinson admitted that he has been left ‘surprised’ by Royal’s upsurge in form, adding that the South American offers ‘something different’ under Conte.

The ex-England stopper said of the 23-year-old: *“I’ve been surprised by him this season.* *Going forward I have always liked him, he offers something different. He worries me defensively though. I feel he has a mistake or a mistimed challenge in him.*

*“This season he has done extremely well. Perhaps that has forced the manager’s hand. There has been no reason not to keep him in there so far.”*

### The Verdict: Getting better and better…

The 23-year-old is one of [only six players](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/30/Show/England-Tottenham) to start every single game under Conte so far this season, which shows his vast improvement and serious turnaround at N17. Having achieved a rating of 6.87 from [WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/328512/History/Emerson-Royal) for his performances in 2021/22, that has shot up to 7.1 in the early weeks of the current campaign.

Royal also currently ranks in Tottenham’s top five best-performing players by average match rating, with only Cristian Romero making more tackles per 90 ([WhoScored](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/30/Show/England-Tottenham)).

Still young and raw, the Brazilian could even carry on improving and become a real mainstay in N17 for years to come if he maintains this run of form.
