# Brighton & Hove Albion: Pervis Estupinan reveals why he turned down Seagulls offer

**Pervis Estupinan [completed his move from Watford to Villarreal](https://twitter.com/VillarrealCF/status/1306186038860288001?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1306186038860288001%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3&ref_url=http%3A%2F%2Fsportwitness.co.uk%2Fplayer-rejected-better-offer-brighton-join-another-club-bureaucracy-slowed-signing%2F) yesterday, although he could have become a Brighton player had things worked out differently.**

Spanish media outlet [El Comercio](https://www.elcomercio.com/deportes/pervis-estupinan-cerca-fichar-villarreal.html) reported \[via [Sport Witness](https://sportwitness.co.uk/player-rejected-better-offer-brighton-join-another-club-bureaucracy-slowed-signing/)\] that the Seagulls had made an offer for the left-back. However, despite the La Liga outfit offering him a lower salary than Brighton, the 22-year-old opted for Unai Emery’s team because they can offer Europa League football this season.

Perversely, despite being on Watford’s books [since 2017](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pervis-estupinan/transfers/spieler/349599), the Ecuador defender has [no experience of English football](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pervis-estupinan/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/349599) and is far more accustomed to La Liga. He has been on loan to [Almeria, Real Mallorca and Osasuna](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pervis-estupinan/transfers/spieler/349599) over the last three seasons, making [91 appearances](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pervis-estupinan/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/349599) for that trio.

He proved to be a decent attacking outlet for the latter last season, contributing [seven assists](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pervis-estupinan/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/349599/verein/331) in all competitions from left-back and averaging [1.2 key passes and 1.6 successful dribbles](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/298694/History/Pervis-Estupi%C3%B1%C3%A1n) per game.

Estupinan is also solid defensively, winning [2.3 tackles per game](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/298694/History/Pervis-Estupi%C3%B1%C3%A1n) in 2019/20 – more than [any player at Brighton](https://www.whoscored.com/Teams/211/Archive/England-Brighton) – along with boasting a match average of [1.6 interceptions](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/298694/History/Pervis-Estupi%C3%B1%C3%A1n).

Aside from those qualities, he could also have added depth to a position where Graham Potter very much needs it – [Bernardo](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/west-ham-transfer-rumours/west-ham-united-club-are-interested-in-brighton-left-back-bernardo/) is the [only natural left-back](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/brighton-amp-hove-albion/kadernachposition/verein/1237) in the Seagulls squad and he has been [linked with a move to West Ham](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11741/12061076/bernardo-brighton-left-back-wanted-by-turkish-champions-istanbul-basaksehir) recently, with Dan Burn [often shunting over to that role](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/dan-burn/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/134270/plus/0/saison/2019/wettbewerb/GB1/verein/1237) from his customary centre-back position.

Estupinan certainly seems like he would have been an ideal purchase for Brighton, as he would not only have added some welcome left-back depth but could also have made a discernible impact on the team, judging by his 2019/20 statistics.

Unfortunately, he has now completed his move to Villarreal for understandable football-based reasons, leaving the Seagulls to wonder what might have been.
