# Leeds: Phil Hay unsure over Whites making January signings

**Leeds United have not made any progress in terms of new signings in the [January transfer window](https://www.givemesport.com/1754870-january-transfer-window-2022-when-does-it-open-when-does-it-close-and-which-players-are-going-to-move) to date, according to reliable journalist Phil Hay.**

### The Lowdown: Injury-plagued season

The Whites have failed to repeat their heroics of last season’s ninth-place finish in the Premier League, sailing [worryingly close](https://www.skysports.com/premier-league-table) to a relegation fight this time around.

While Marcelo Bielsa can’t use it solely as an excuse, [injuries](https://www.premierinjuries.com/injury-table.php) have clearly not helped the Whites, with key figures such as Luke Ayling, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford [all missing for significant chunks](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/ausfallzeiten/verein/399) of the campaign.

These fitness issues have heightened the need for January reinforcements to come in, but [no new faces](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/transfers/verein/399/plus/?saison_id=2021&pos=&detailpos=&w_s=w) have arrived since the window opened.

### The Latest: Hay gives worrying update

Speaking in a Q&A for [The Athletic](https://theathletic.com/3054607/2022/01/08/leeds-fans-discuss-the-west-ham-game-with-our-reporter-phil-hay/) on Sunday, Hay provided an update on the situation, admitting that progress is slow at the moment.

In response to a supporter’s query on where things stand with January transfer, the journalist outlined: “Very quiet on that front – which isn’t to say they’re not working on anything but we’re yet to see a deal move to an advanced stage. Extra resources have felt necessary for a while. The squad has been too susceptible to injuries this season.”

### The Verdict: Signings are a must

It is still relatively early in the month, but failing to bring in any new signings would be negligent from Leeds, and it’s a bit worrying to hear Hay saying that no prospective deals have reached an “advanced stage”.

Bielsa’s side are [16th](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/premier-league/table) in the table and without Phillips and Liam Cooper for the [foreseeable future](https://www.theguardian.com/football/2021/dec/31/leeds-injury-woes-deepen-with-kalvin-phillips-and-liam-cooper-out-till-march-bielsa), so it is imperative that a central midfielder arrives at Elland Road, for starters.

Wholesale changes aren’t required, especially as key figures [return from injury](https://www.premierinjuries.com/injury-table.php), but one or two additions would improve the [depth at Bielsa’s disposal](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/leeds-united/kadernachposition/verein/399) and surely lessen the chances of a damaging return to the Championship.
