# Tottenham Hotspur: Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg set to become Jose Mourinho’s first summer recruit

**Tottenham Hotspur have agreed a fee with Southampton for Saints midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after weeks of negotiation, [reports](https://theathletic.com/1959808/2020/08/06/transfer-news-tracker-liverpool-tottenham-latest/) say.**

At first Spurs fell short of Southampton’s [£25m](https://theathletic.com/1959808/2020/08/06/transfer-news-tracker-liverpool-tottenham-latest/) asking price for the [33-cap](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pierre-emile-hojbjerg/profil/spieler/167799) Denmark international, who has made it clear he will not sign a new deal at St Mary’s.

According to The Athletic’s [David Ornstein](https://theathletic.com/1959808/2020/08/06/transfer-news-tracker-liverpool-tottenham-latest/), as relayed by [Ricky Sacks](https://twitter.com/RickSpur/status/1291620879818948608), both clubs have agreed a transfer fee that is significantly less than what Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side were initially looking for, with the figure amounting to £15m, although this could potentially rise to £19m.

It has previously been reported that the player was [Mourinho’s top transfer target](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-transfer-latest-hojbjerg-mourinho-cut-price-deal/) this summer.

The Danish midfielder will undergo a medical at the beginning of next week, meaning Hojbjerg should become Mourinho’s first summer recruit in the coming days, signing a five-year deal.

Everton also [reportedly](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/pierre-emile-hojbjerg-tottenham-hotspur-very-close-completing-deal-southampton-transfer-everton-interest/) had a bid accepted, but the 25-year-old has set his sights on a move to north London.

The Toffees were offering [£25m](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/pierre-emile-hojbjerg-tottenham-hotspur-very-close-completing-deal-southampton-transfer-everton-interest/), but the ex-Bayern Munich ace made it clear he wanted to play for the Portuguese instead.

Hojbjerg, who turned 25 earlier this week, has scored five goals in over a hundred appearances for [the Saints](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/pierre-emile-hojbjerg/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/167799) in all competitions after arriving from Schalke in 2016 and started the 2019-20 campaign as club captain.

However, the Dane was stripped of the captaincy after he told [Ralph Hasenhuttl](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53664325) he had no intention of extending his contract, and has seemed destined to leave the South Coast ever since.

[Southampton](https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/53664325) are confident their newfound relationship with the Lilywhites can pave the way for Kyle Walker-Peters to head in the opposite direction.

Spurs could be ready for a reshuffle upon his arrival, as [Harry Winks](https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/tottenham-transfer-rumours/tottenham-harry-winks-transfer-rumours-hojbjerg-arrival-southampton/) could be in line for a shock exit as his future at his boyhood club is in doubt.

Hojbjerg is a top-class player who is a strong [threat in the air](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/101859/Show/Pierre-Emile-H%C3%B8jbjerg), a hard-working midfielder with great [concentration](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/101859/Show/Pierre-Emile-H%C3%B8jbjerg) on-and-off the ball, and someone who doesn’t shy away from a [tackle or two](https://www.whoscored.com/Players/101859/Show/Pierre-Emile-H%C3%B8jbjerg), which is exactly the type of player Mourinho needs to challenge for trophies next season.
