# Plymouth Argyle: Gary Sawyer signs new deal at Home Park

**Plymouth Argyle veteran Gary Sawyer has signed a contract extension at Home Park as Ryan Lowe begins to assemble his squad for a tilt at League One next season.**

The club’s official website [pafc.co.uk](https://www.pafc.co.uk/news/2020/june/skipper-sawyer-signs-on/) confirmed on Monday that the club captain has accepted his manager’s offer of a new deal ahead of 2020/21, following on from team-mate [Danny Mayor](https://www.pafc.co.uk/news/2020/june/the-mayors-second-term/) in recent days.

The 34-year-old defender is just [three games short of the 300 mark](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/42346/verein/2262) for Plymouth, having signed his first professional deal with the club way back in [2003/04](https://www.pafc.co.uk/news/2020/june/skipper-sawyer-signs-on/), and he has spent the [majority of his club career](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdatenverein/spieler/42346) with the Pilgrims.

Despite his advancing years, he was still a regular feature in Lowe’s starting XI during the 2019/20 season, making [28 starts](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdaten/spieler/42346) in Argyle’s promotion-winning campaign and playing his part in helping his team to record the [joint-third best defensive record in League Two](https://www.skysports.com/league-2-table).

A [left-back for most of his career](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/42346), Sawyer showed his versatility by spending the bulk of the season just gone [in the centre of defence](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdaten/spieler/42346), a role in which he had [only briefly dabbled prior to last summer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/42346/saison//verein/0/liga/0/wettbewerb//trainer_id/0/pos/3).

Sawyer was a regular presence in the team [in their two most recent League One seasons,](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/leistungsdatendetails/spieler/42346) although whether he will start every week against younger strikers of a better standard than those he faced this term is debatable.

Nevertheless, as Lowe tries to get as strong a squad as possible in place for Plymouth’s return to the third tier, having their long-serving captain on board once again should come as a tremendous fillip. Both on and off the pitch, the veteran defender’s leadership and experience of [more than 400 Football League games](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/gary-sawyer/detaillierteleistungsdaten/spieler/42346) could be massively influential at Home Park in the coming season.
