# Portsmouth: Defender linked with Belgium move

**Portsmouth defender Christian Burgess is subject to interest from Belgian side Royale Union Saint-Gilloise, [according to journalist Dave Peters.](https://twitter.com/DeefPeters/status/1272497714023018496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-32137202562563788952.ampproject.net%2F2006050512000%2Fframe.html)**

28-year-old centre-back Burgess has been a key figure at Fratton Park since his arrival in 2015 but his time at the club may now be set to end.

[With his contract coming to an end this summer](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-burgess/profil/spieler/244221), the defender could end on a high note as Portsmouth look to gain promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs.

Making [32 appearances this term](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-burgess/profil/spieler/244221), Burgess’ performances have impressed with RUSG now showing interest in him and with Portsmouth [struggling to agree terms](https://www.portsmouth.co.uk/sport/football/portsmouth-fc/mark-catlin-we-cant-force-christian-burgess-stay-portsmouth-weve-done-all-we-can-2869959) on a new deal, it now seems that an exit is likely.

Writing on [Twitter](https://twitter.com/DeefPeters/status/1272497714023018496?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fd-32137202562563788952.ampproject.net%2F2006050512000%2Fframe.html), Peters said: *‘Union remains active in the transfer market. Now central defender Christian Burgess also comes from third division Portsmouth. Do signatures of Morris, Lapoussin and Perbet follow? #proximusleague #union #sources.’*

Union Saint-Gilloise finished fourth in Belgium’s second tier last term and are looking to build a side worthy of promotion next term.

If Portsmouth gain promotion to the Championship, they would undoubtedly be sad to see Burgess leave the club.

The defender has been a consistently good performer this term, helping the team keep [13 clean sheets](https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/christian-burgess/leistungsdaten/spieler/244221) in the league whilst also chipping in with three goals. He will be extremely hard to replace if he does move on to pastures new.
