Former Portsmouth midfielder Cameron McGeehan has thanked the club’s fans for their support after his fateful penalty miss in the League One play-off semi-final against Oxford United.
McGeehan missed the deciding penalty which saw Pompey fail to reach the play-off final, consigning them to another season in League One in 2020/21.
After leaving Fratton Park this summer for a return to parent club Barnsley, the £360,000-valued midfielder was linked with a permanent move back to Portsmouth, with The News claiming that officials from the club were keen to seal a transfer.
However, despite those hopes at Portsmouth, it was confirmed last week that Belgian side KV Oostende had completed a move for the midfielder.
Speaking about his final game for Portsmouth and that penalty miss, McGeehan thanked the fans for their support after his decisive spot kick failure, telling The News: ‘We were so disappointed we didn’t get through to the final – and I was gutted that I missed the penalty.
‘The reaction I actually got from the fans was so positive. I’ve rarely missed a penalty, but there was a lot of positive stuff, such as “Thank you for your efforts.” I saw those messages and it meant a lot. I would like to say thanks to those people.
‘The only person who had a go at me was my old man. He told me I should have gone down the middle instead of shooting to the left.
‘I was trying to go hard and low, but unfortunately the keeper saved it. I have always taken penalties throughout my career and scored in quite a few big games, so I’m pretty confident on them.
‘But sometimes you miss. I just wish it wasn’t in that game for Pompey.’
Having made 12 appearances in the league as Portsmouth reached the play-offs, it seems a shame that McGeehan won’t get the chance to atone for that penalty miss by going back to Fratton Park, now that he has moved on to Belgium.
His comments to the Portsmouth fans are sure to be appreciated by many of the Pompey faithful who remained supportive of him despite his penalty heartbreak.
