Portsmouth manager Kenny Jackett is keen to hand academy talent Joe Hancott a chance at left-back as the future of Brandon Haunstrup continues to be debated.
With the 2019/20 season ending in disappointment for Jackett and his Pompey squad, attention is now turning to the summer transfer window and improvements ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.
Whilst a number of players are expected to come in, some first team regulars have already departed, with left-sided defender Brandon Haunstrup also reportedly set for a move to Scottish side Kilmarnock.
The 23-year-old saw his contract at Fratton Park come to an end in June and talks are now said to have come to a standstill, with the defender rejecting the Hampshire club’s offer of a new deal.
Haunstrup’s seemingly likely exit this summer means that Jackett could be desperate to sort out that side of his defensive sooner rather than later, and it has been reported that academy talent Hancott will be handed a chance in the first team.
The 19-year-old left-back arrived at Portsmouth back in 2009 as a youngster and he has spent three separate loan spells away from the club, twice with Basingstoke Town and once with Bognor Regis Town (as per Portsmouth News).
His performances are said to have prompted Jackett to give him a chance from next season as Pompey look to bounce back following a second successive failure in the play-offs.
It is always good to see clubs giving youngsters an opportunity in the first team and, if Hancott can go on to make a similar impact to that of Haunstrup (who made 57 appearances for Portsmouth), then Pompey should have a very promising left-back set to break into the side.
Of course, Haunstrup could yet decide to stay and, if he does, then Jackett will have two good options on the left-hand side of his defence heading into next season.
