New Portsmouth signing Michael Jacobs has urged his attacking team-mates to quickly develop a rapport with one another.
After a disappointing campaign last term which saw Pompey fail to gain promotion from League One for a second successive season, many fans would have expected Kenny Jackett’s side to get off to a good start this time round.
However, an opening day 0-0 draw with Shrewsbury Town at Fratton Park was followed up by a 4-0 thumping at the hands of Premier League side Brighton in the Carabao Cup Cup last week.
Two games without a goal saw Portsmouth head into yesterday’s tie with Rochdale looking to bounce back but the likes of John Marquis and Ronan Curtis failed to find the back of the net.
Jacobs, who arrived last week as he signed a two-year contract with the club, came off the bench during the 0-0 draw with Rochdale and he has now demanded his teammates to quickly improve going forward. As per Portsmouth News, he said:
“It went alright, it’s about getting that relationship with people and sharpness on the pitch.
“I’ve been here a few days with the boys, so it’s important I get a relationship with the players at the top end of the pitch.
“I need to get that continuity and try to build stuff.
“I enjoyed getting back out there.
“It might take a bit of time to get that sharpness but I felt good.”
The 28-year-old was released by Wigan Athletic earlier this summer after featuring 32 times in the Championship last season.
Some strong but positive words from Jacobs and it is advice that that his teammates need to fully take on board.
A poor start to the season has left Portsmouth languishing in 17th and without a goal in their last three games. A lack of firepower is something that their forwards will need to rectify quickly to avoid losing insurmountable ground on the League One pace-setters.
