Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett will make a call on the future of central defender Jack Whatmough and could consider a loan move.
The 23-year-old originally began his career with Southampton before moving to Fratton Park as a youngster in 2009.
Developing through the club’s youth ranks, the centre-back would make his official debut as a first team player against Southend in 2013.
Appearing regularly in the 2018/2019 season, Whatmough struggled last term having suffered a long-term injury problem.
Returning to training this week due his partner’s pregnancy during the pandemic, the youngster is now expected to be assessed by Jackett.
Having lost Christian Burgess this summer, Jackett has signed Sean Raggett on a permanent deal but it remains to be seen if the Pompey boss could hand Whatmough regular playing time as a push for automatic promotion takes shape.
Portsmouth can not afford to carry any players this season and it may be a good idea for Whatmough to go out on loan this summer.
The defender’s absence last season and his late arrival to training is likely to have him under-prepared.
