# Potential Consequences: Southampton sign Jean-Kevin Augustin

**Shane Long’s upturn in form does not look like it will be enough to make Ralph Hasenhuttl rethink his transfer plans for the summer.**

Despite the 32-year-old’s goalscoring run, the Daily Mirror ([via Tribal Football](https://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/rb-leipzig-striker-jean-kevin-augustin-interesting-southampton-4278853)) reports that Hasenhuttl is still interested in bringing RB Leipzig’s Jean-Kevin Augustin to Southampton once the transfer window opens.

And while the Frenchman’s arrival is likely to impact Long, he might not be alone.

Furthermore, here are two potential consequences of Southampton signing Augustin this summer.

## Danny Ings Becomes Second-Choice Striker

With a four-year contract set to commence in July at the end of his initial loan spell ([Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11669/11467379/danny-ings-joins-southampton-on-loan-from-liverpool)), the plan appeared to be for Danny Ings to lead Southampton’s line for seasons to come.

However, after a campaign where the 26-year-old has struggled with injuries and given interest in Augustin, the south coast club now seem to be having their doubts.

A player Hasenhuttl rates very highly ([also per Sky Sports](https://www.skysports.com/football/news/11700/11609721/ralph-hasenhuttl-coy-on-jean-kevin-augustin-links)), Ings could quickly find himself playing second fiddle should the Saints manage to land the France U21 international.

## Nathan Redmond Stays Out Wide

Early into his tenure as Southampton boss, Hasenhuttl felt he was left with little choice but to use wide man Nathan Redmond as a striker.

Not being able to rely on Ings, Long and Charlie Austin for different reasons, the Austrian moved Redmond into a more central position, and he thrived there.

Since then, the former Norwich City man has returned to the flank. And if the Saints end up signing a new No.9 like Augustin, you would expect him to remain there.
