Manchester City star Phil Foden has been praised for his efforts during England's 3-0 win over Senegal in the World Cup

The Lowdown: England through to quarter-finals

England managed to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the World Cup on Sunday night as goals from Jordan Henderson, Harry Kane and Bukayo Saka sealed the victory.

Gareth Southgate's team will now take on reigning World Cup holders France next Saturday for a place in the semi-finals.

Looking back over the win against the AFCON champions, despite not getting on the scoresheet, Foden received plenty of praise for his performance.

The Latest: Praise for Foden

Following England's third goal of the game, journalist Tom Barclay took to Twitter to hail Foden for his role in the build-up to Saka finding the net.

He tweeted: "So good to see Phil Foden flourishing for England. Excellent assist for Bukayo Saka to make it 3-0. More Southgate decisions paying off..."

The Verdict: A star performance from Foden

With 40 touches of the ball in total during his 65 minutes on the pitch against Senegal, the 22-year-old completed three key passes in total, more than any other England player on the night.

Having set up England's second and third goals, this display ultimately earned the City star an overall match rating of 8.1/10 from SofaScore, making him the highest-rated player to feature.

The Daily Mirror also picked up on Foden's efforts in the match, as they said in their player ratings article that he "showed exactly why he is such an incredible young talent".

Taking all of that into account, it's safe to say that a large part of England's success on Sunday night was down to Foden and his ability to set up goalscoring opportunities for his team-mates.

Looking ahead to Saturday's showdown against France, the City gem must surely be in with a shout of keeping his place in the starting XI.
