Southampton look increasingly likely to miss out on the signing of Tottenham right-back Djed Spence in January, according to a fresh transfer update.

The Lowdown: Spence linked with Saints move

Nathan Jones is looking to make key additions during the current transfer window, as he looks to guide his side clear of relegation from the Premier League.

One player who has been linked with a move to St Mary's is Spence, who has been deemed surplus to requirements by Spurs for the second half of the season.

It looks as though that ship may have sailed, however, following a new update.

The Latest: Transfer now looks unlikely

According to Football Insider, Saints are 'expected to be out of the running' for the signing of Spence, as they close in on Luton Town's James Bree instead.

The report does state that they have 'enquired' about bringing in the 22-year-old from Spurs but he is now in 'advanced talks' with Brentford.

The Verdict: Wise decision by Saints

Spence could have been an exciting signing for Saints, considering he shone on loan at Nottingham Forest last season, registering four assists from right-back and producing endless energy.

That being said, Kyle Walker-Peters is Jones' undisputed first-choice right-back currently, so the £25,000-a-week Spurs man could have found himself similarly struggling for playing time, despite being described as 'swashbuckling' by Ian Wright in the recent past.

The likely imminent addition of Bree also means there would have been little sense in signing Spence, who plays in exactly the same position at the Luton man.

Should something change in the coming days - Bree not signing, namely - the Englishman would still be a strong addition for Saints, but it looks as though a loan move elsewhere is on the cards.
