Tottenham Hotspur’s transfer policy has been one of the most widely discussed subjects in the British media in recent years, particularly since they failed to sign a single player during the summer transfer window but, whilst the building of the new stadium can explain their lack of activity, their decision to abandon their pursuit of Ross Barkley is difficult to understand.
Indeed, Barkley’s potential transfer to Tottenham carried a feeling of inevitability this time last year, but Chelsea eventually secured his signature at the second time of asking as Pochettino opted to pursue other transfer targets.
Barkley’s opening to life at Chelsea hinted that Pochettino had made a wise decision, but the Everton academy product is now playing with the intensity of a player reborn under Maurizio Sarri and his performances suggest they completed a masterstroke deal at just £15 million.
With Barkley’s electric form at both club and international level in mind, we asked Tottenham supporters if they regretted missing out on the playmaker in January and not a single fan suggested that the club made the right call on Barkley.
A record of 3 goals and 3 assists in Barkley’s last 3 Premier League appearances has certainly influenced the opinion of Tottenham supporters who previously would have been inclined to label him as a flop.
But the quality of Barkley’s performances and the confidence he is exuding on the field of play would suggest that his recent form is more than just a purple patch and, much to the disappointment of Tottenham supporters, Pochettino made a huge blunder by turning down the chance to sign him in January.
