Ryan Shawcross, the no-nonsense Stoke City captain has been linked with the Merseyside giants, Liverpool, suggest several sources.
The 22 year old joined Stoke City in the 07-08 season from Manchester United but it was not until the following year with Stoke’s rise to the EPL that Shawcross came to prominence.
He proved his worth to Pulis and co with strong performances and stronger tackles. Shawcross came to epitomise the rugged work ethic his Stoke City outfit became known for under the fine stewardship of Tony Pulis. Shawcross’s committed and at times fearsome full blooded displays won him as many detractors as it did fans.
Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger became a staunch critic of Shawcross. This was after a couple of high profile incidents. The first was a late (and off the pitch) tackle with then Arsenal striker Adebayor, which led to the strikers three week lay off. The following season Adebayor, this time playing for Man City, got his revenge with a slap in the face, getting himself sent off in the process!
Worst was to come however when Shawcross, in a miss-timed and ill judged tackle, broke Arsenal’s young midfielder Ranmsey’s leg. Shawcross rightfully was punished but then wrongly demonised by Wenger, claiming he should be banned from football forever. Shawcross showed immediate remorse and admitted responsibility for his poor tackle.
Shawcross upon his return from a ban (a bit shorter than Wenger’s lifetime ban,) continued to show his tough and rugged attributes and was rewarded with the captaincy of Stoke City. A move which cemented Pulis’s faith, trust and belief in Shawcross. Recently Shawcross has shown ambition to play for England (I believe him will) by turning down the chance to represent Wales.
Liverpool despite having a number of central defenders have found themselves needing to bolster their ranks further. Daniel Agger, a talented, combative but also comfortable on the ball defender has suffered a list of injuries that have caused him to miss much of the past three seasons. Martin Skrtel too has a ongoing calf injury which may mean he will miss the opening fixtures.
This leaving the club’s vice captain but aging Carragher as well as the cult figure; but often mistake prone Sotirios Kyrgiakos, both the wrong side of 30. Wilson (or Woeful as i call him) is far from ready and Kelly, although more promising has been involved in the pre-season batterings conceeding a massive 15 goals in five games.
So Ryan Shawcross (Although a product of bitter rivals Man U) could be a ideal replacement. Built of the same stuff as Carragher, dogged, determined and a natural leader of men. His uncompromising manner and bravery on the field reminds me much of Carragher and maybe, (if he signs) in the coming years he could replace his large boots (but never replace his large mouth) in defence.Like what the TT have on offer?
